- Climate
- General Weather Conditions
- Weather conditions such as heat and cold, rain and sunshine, and aridity and humidity in the earth’s surface are affected by temperature, atmospheric pressure, the sun, snow, rain, clouds, and wind; they are also greatly influenced by the latitude, the altitude, and topography.
- Uiseong-gun belongs to Youngnam area. It is surrounded by Taebeak and Sobaek mountain range, so that it is not greatly influenced by the air streams. Also, due to its geographical nature as an inland basin that has a little influence of the continental climate, there is a huge temperature difference between heat and cold.
- In national weather forecasts, Uiseong area is reported as the place with the hottest summers and the coldest winters.
- Uiseong is known as a cold and dry area, because of a few cloudy days and a little precipitation. The first day of frost and freeze comes faster than in other areas, and this chilly weather lasts very long, causing a longer winter.Although it is impossible to be proved scientifically, the number of foggy days was increased after the construction of the Andong and Imha Dams, and the winter temperature has significantly lowered. In the summer, there is often hail in some areas.
- Mt. Geumseongsan of Geumseong-myeon is a dormant volcano that created small mountains around it.
- Temperature
- The average temperature of Uiseong region in 1995 was 10.4℃ and in 1996 it was 11℃. The average temperature in the last 25 years has been 11℃.
- The national average temperature in the inland area is lower than the coastal area. The national isotherm of 11℃ shows that the graph goes south from Goseong, Kangwon, to Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, and goes up to Gapyeong, connected to Gaeseong.
- Uiseong is located in the 12℃ line because it is about the same latitude with Daejeon; however, oddly, its isotherm 1℃ lower.
- The highest and lowest temperatures since the first meteorological observation in 1972 are -23.3℃ in 1981 and 38.5℃ in 1994; the difference is as much as 61.8℃. The lowest monthly average temperature was -7.8℃ in July, 1981, and the highest monthly mean temperature was 27.8℃ in July, 1994; and the difference is 35.6℃
- The temperature of Uiseong region has a low yearly average temperature, because there are colder winters and hotter summers. It is a region that has huge daily and yearly temperature ranges.
- Precipitation
- Precipitation is influenced by the air mass and the front. Because Uiseong region is located in a geographical basin between Taebaek and Sobaek mountain ranges, it is a dry area with very little precipitation.
- It rains an average of 92 days annually. Meteorological observation record for 25 years from 1972 to 1996 shows that the year with the most yearly precipitation was 1972, with 1,290.8mm, and the year with the least yearly precipitation was 1994, with 505.1mm. The average precipitation is only 961.5mm, which shows the shortage of the rainfall, comparing to the national mean of 1,200~1,300 mm.
